UP Universelle Materials Handling Technology GmbH

Location: Schopfheim and Dresden (Germany), Shanghai and Jiashan, Zhejiang (China)

Industry: Automotive and logistics

Application: High-speed EMS with inductive current supply and shielded Wi-Fi communication via slotted waveguides

UP Universelle Fördertechnik GmbH operates primarily in the field of materials handling technology for the automotive and logistics industries. Highly skilled employees with decades of experience play a crucial role in this. Together with carefully selected partners, UP ensures that projects are carried out as a turnkey solution. In this context, UP offers services such as planning, dimensioning, engineering, and project management, among others. These activities are also consistently applied in the implementation of the company’s own machine and plant engineering projects.

An international focus has been an integral part of the company’s business activities since its founding in 2005. Particularly in Asia—especially in the People’s Republic of China—many projects have already been successfully completed, and UP has become a major player in the Chinese machine and plant engineering sector.

Project Description

A high-speed EMS with two cars was installed in a joint customer’s Application Demonstration Center. It is designed to simultaneously retrieve tire blanks with a total weight of approximately 50 kg from an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) and transport them to vulcanizing presses. Since the cycle time for vulcanization is critical, high travel (4 m/s) and lifting speeds (1 m/s), as well as high acceleration (1.5 m/s2), are essential.

A MAXOLUTION®-system solution with MOVITRANS® for contactless power supply was selected. The slotted waveguide integrated into the mounting rail enables shielded Wi-Fi communication with high bandwidth. The drive package consists of the MOVIPRO®® drive controller and mechatronic IE4 DRC.. electronic motors with an extended control range for travel and lifting. The trolleys are coordinated via a segment controller, and positioning is handled by a WCS encoder. Last but not least, parameterization and diagnostics are handled using the configurable system software MOVIVISION®.

In this project, UP Universelle Materials Handling Technology GmbH carried out the complete mechanical design and engineering.

Customer Requirements

  • Weight: A cart transports a tire weighing up to 50 kg.
  • Speed: The cycle time is critical for tire vulcanization, so high travel (4 m/s) and lifting speeds (1 m/s), as well as high acceleration (1.5 m/s2), are essential.

The Project at a Glance

  • Shielded Wi-Fi communication with maximum bandwidth thanks to the slotted waveguide integrated into the mounting rail
  • Maintenance-free current supply thanks to MOVITRANS®' contactless energy transfer system®
  • High precision, acceleration, speed, and energy efficiency thanks to the powerful mechatronic IE4 DRC.. electronic motors
  • Early fault detection and rapid setup of the control system through virtual startup using the simulation/emulation function in the smart MOVIVISION®software
  • Fast and professional project implementation thanks to our many years of experience with EMS systems and our global network of MAXOLUTION® engineers
Over the past 15 years, using SEW-EURODRIVE’s products with the option of local support in nearly every country in which we have set up our systems have been significant factors in the success of our projects domestically and abroad.
